Every winter form October to February these birds reside in this wildlife refuge by huge numbers, more than 10.000 Cranes can be counted. I could observe them during my visit, with André, early december 2013. We were very lucky with the weather, the conditions were optimal.
The Cranes tend to spend the night in shallow waters witch are very accessible to the public and of course to photographers. A 400 to 800mm (witch I used) lens is your best companion to make frame filling pictures.
In the early morning it’s always a rush to be there in time. These moments with rapidly changing colours, from blue to purple, red and finally yellow, are ideal to witness the departure of the Cranes to other places in the refuge. The take off is incredible to watch, first they tend to extend their neck horizontally before they begin to run to take off. Sometimes several birds take off at once, an incredible sight.
When the sun tends to the horizon they come back. Often these landings will  give some commotion between the neighbours. If you want to see these cranes it must be the best place on the world.
